Onelli’s Half Marathons!
Running for Research, Inspired by Experience
I had my first seizure in 2014 at the age of 10. Since then, I’ve been on different medications to manage my epilepsy, navigating the challenges that come with it. This led me to study neuroscience at university, and completing my undergraduate dissertation about epilepsy, furthering my understanding and passion for this condition.
I have family members who have also lived with epilepsy their entire lives, dealing with its unpredictability and struggles firsthand. This is a lifelong journey for us and the hundreds of thousands of Canadians affected by epilepsy.
While I have been extremely lucky to be able to manage my epilepsy, a lot of people are not as fortunate. In my time volunteering, I had the privilege of working with a student before he tragically passed away due to epilepsy at just 8 years old. His story is a painful reminder of how much work still needs to be done.
Despite being one of the most common neurological disorders (1% of the world population), it receives a fraction of the research funding compared to other neurological and chronic conditions with lower prevalence.
That’s why I’m running the Vancouver and Calgary half marathons to support Epilepsy Canada, funding research and support for those living with this condition. Any donation, big or small, can help bring us closer to better treatments and, one day, a cure. Thank you for taking the time to read my page and sharing/donating!
