VIA Rail Pass
Epilepsy Canada distributes VIA Rail passes to Canadian residents with epilepsy. Passengers with epilepsy may travel with a companion free of charge, in the same class of service,
on any VIA Rail train.
This pass provides two (2) tickets for the price of one (1) provided your companion is aware of your needs and can administer medical care in the event of a seizure.
Who is eligible?
The companion must be at least 12 years old and be able to take the responsibilities required of them.
In cases where children cannot travel alone, a companion is not allowed. This includes:
- Children under 8
- Children ages 8 to 11 on a trip where they are not entitled to travel alone according to "unaccompanied children" guidelines, ie. travelling in sleeper or overnight
How to apply:
A note from the physician attending to the person with epilepsy is required.
It must state proof of the disorder.
-The note must indicate that, in the event of a seizure, you are unable to administer medical care on your own.
-The medical note must be dated within the past year unless the condition or limitations on the note are stated to be permanent.
Please send your medical note along with your complete address and telephone number via:
Upon receipt of your note, we will send your pass to your home address.
Passes are valid for 10 years. You will need to show the pass to a VIA Rail counter sales agent to be issued tickets.
Bookings for support persons require a telephone sales agent's assistance. Please call VIA at 1-888-VIA-RAIL (842-7245) to book your travel.
You must have government issued photo identification on your person when you travel.
